The tree fuchsia, also known by its Maori name kotukutuku, is a New Zealand native plant, and is the largest fuchsia in the world.
The nectar of the flowers attracts birds especially tui, bellbirds and silvereyes. When they drink nectar from the flowers, their faces get covered in blue pollen.
The berries are favoured by people as well as by birds. Maori valued the sweet berries, and gave its own name, konini. European settleres made konini jams and puddings.
