See the scene, not the edge.

Apparent field of view describes how wide the circular window feels to your eye. At the same magnification, the Luminos 82° window spans roughly 64% more angular width than a 50° eyepiece.

That extra room is useful as well as dramatic. A target can stay visible longer in a manually tracked telescope, surrounding star fields provide context, and large clusters or nebulae feel less confined.

Start low, then climb. A longer focal length usually makes a target easier to locate. Centre it, focus carefully, then move to a shorter focal length if the atmosphere and object reward more power.

Check the mechanical fit

Barrel first. Balance second.

The number on the eyepiece sets magnification; the barrel diameter decides whether it physically fits. The heavier 2″ models also change the load at the back or side of the telescope.

1.25″ or 2″?

The 7, 10 and 15mm models fit standard 1.25″ holders. The 19, 23 and 31mm models require a 2″ focuser or 2″ diagonal.

A 1.25″ eyepiece can normally be used in a 2″ holder with the correct adapter.
A 2″ eyepiece cannot fit a 1.25″-only focuser or diagonal.

Plan for the payload.

The family grows substantially from the compact 7mm to the 1.186kg 31mm. On a Dobsonian, small mount or light focuser, that difference can shift balance or demand more tension.

Glass, grip and control.

The optical idea is ambitious; the handling is deliberately simple. A broad rubber centre grip controls the retractable eyecup, while anodised aluminium bodies and threaded barrels make the range feel at home in a serious observing kit.

Every air-to-glass surface receives multiple coating layers to support light transmission, contrast and clean colour.

Twist-up eyecup

Rotate the broad rubber grip counter-clockwise to raise the eyecup or clockwise to lower it for glasses and personal eye position.

Parfocal family

Swap between Luminos focal lengths with little or no refocusing. A small touch-up can still be normal across telescopes and observers.

Threaded barrels

Add compatible nebula, colour or neutral-density filters directly to the insert barrel; match the filter diameter to the eyepiece.

From case to first light

Four calm steps at the telescope.

Eyepieces are simple to install, but a careful routine protects the barrel, the telescope and the object you just spent time finding.

Start low

Use a longer focal length to locate and centre the target. Check that the eyepiece barrel matches the focuser or diagonal.
Seat and secure

Loosen the holder, insert the chrome barrel fully, then tighten gently until snug. Do not overtighten or mark the barrel.
Focus and set eye height

Focus on the target, then rotate the rubber grip to place the eyecup where the full field is comfortable and stable.
Increase with purpose

Move to a shorter focal length for more detail. If the image becomes soft, dim or restless, step back to lower power.

Care for the optical surfaces

Keep both dust caps on whenever the eyepiece is not in use.
Remove loose dust with a clean blower before touching a lens surface.
Use optical-grade cleaning supplies sparingly; never use household glass cleaner.
Store dry and capped. The Luminos eyepieces are not waterproof.
Allow dew to evaporate in a safe, ventilated place before sealing the eyepiece away.

Luminos questions, answered.

Does selecting a variant include all six eyepieces?

No. Each variant is one individual Luminos eyepiece in the selected focal length. The page covers all six so you can compare them accurately before choosing.

Which Luminos focal length should I buy first?

Start by entering your telescope details in the calculator. Look for a useful gap in your existing eyepieces rather than duplicating a similar magnification. A lower-power option is often the most forgiving first view; shorter focal lengths are more dependent on aperture, collimation and atmospheric steadiness.

Will the 19, 23 or 31mm fit my 1.25″ telescope?

Not in a 1.25″-only holder. Those three models have 2″ barrels and require a compatible 2″ focuser or 2″ diagonal. A 1.25″-to-2″ adapter enlarges the holder for smaller eyepieces; it cannot make a 2″ eyepiece fit a smaller opening.

What does parfocal mean in real use?

The six Luminos eyepieces are designed around a common focus position, so switching within the family usually needs little or no focuser movement. Small differences in eyesight, telescope accessories and seating can still call for a fine adjustment.

Are Luminos eyepieces suitable for people who wear glasses?

Lower the twist-up eyecup to bring glasses closer to the eye lens. The published eye relief is 12mm on the 7 and 10mm, 17mm on the 15mm, 20mm on the 19 and 23mm, and 27mm on the 31mm. Whether you can see the complete 82° field depends on your frames, facial geometry and required eye position.

Can I use filters or a Barlow lens?

Yes, when the accessory matches the barrel format and mechanical load. Each Luminos barrel is filter-threaded. A compatible Barlow increases magnification, so calculate the resulting power before use—especially with the 7 and 10mm models.

Is the 31mm automatically the brightest or best deep-sky choice?

No single eyepiece is best for every telescope. The 31mm gives the broadest Luminos true field, but in a fast telescope it may produce an exit pupil larger than your eye can use. Sky brightness, focal ratio, obstruction, balance and target size all matter. The calculator helps reveal that trade-off.

Are these eyepieces waterproof?

No. Celestron lists every Luminos eyepiece as not waterproof. Protect them from rain and spray, dry dew before storage, and keep the caps fitted when they are out of the telescope.

2. My product is faulty or defective

The following process will apply where you believe that:

Your product is faulty or defective (e.g. it does not work, is unsafe, is not fit for purpose, or is not acceptable in appearance and finish).

The product you have received is different to what you have ordered: e.g. you ordered a small size but have received a large.

The number of products you have received is incorrect: e.g. you ordered 3 shirts but only received 2.

The product you have received is a fake.

The product you have received looks different from how it is advertised on Buy Kiwi (please note however that due to photographic and screen limitations, some actual products may differ to a small extent in visual appearance from the way they appear on the Platform).

The product you have received has been damaged during delivery or is empty: e.g. you have ordered glassware but the product was broken when you took it out of the packaging, or, the package delivered was empty.

The product is missing pieces or parts (e.g. you order a remote-control car and do not receive the remote control).
1. You must lodge a complaint with Buy Kiwi by emailing support@buykiwi.co.nz within a ‘reasonable time’ of receiving your product.
2. Within 5 business days of receiving your complaint, Buy Kiwi will liaise with the Seller and will either (i) determine whether or not you are eligible for our Buyer Guarantee; and/or (ii) request that you send your product to the Seller’s return location so that either we or the Seller can complete an investigation.
3. Where you are required to send back your product, you may take it to a pick up or drop off location (as notified to you at the time you lodge the complaint) (in which case it will be shipped to the Seller’s return location free of charge), or, you may arrange your own shipping (which may not be refunded). We recommend that you keep evidence that you have sent your product back to the Seller’s return location. If you are sending back a product that is damaged, please also send the parcel or cover in which your product came as it may be used to make a claim against the relevant courier company.
4. Where we have requested that you send your product back to the Seller’s return location, Buy Kiwi will make a decision as to whether or not you are eligible for our Buyer Guarantee, within 5 business days of receiving the product.
5. If, following consultation with the Seller, Buy Kiwi determines that you are eligible for our Buyer Guarantee, in the first instance, the Seller will either repair your product, or issue you with a replacement or a refund.
3. My product has not arrived

This section applies where your product has not arrived, or where your product did not arrive within the timeframe specified for your order (allowing for reasonable delay).

Please note that generally, you are responsible for accepting a product when it is delivered to your delivery address. You will not be eligible for our Buyer Guarantee where (i) you refuse delivery, or (ii) your product has been tracked and signed as delivered.

If you believe that your product has not arrived (or if your product did not arrive within the timeframe specified for your order, allowing for reasonable delay), you may be eligible for our Buyer Guarantee. The following process will apply:
1. If the Seller has been notified first of the non-delivery.
2. You must lodge a complaint with Buy Kiwi support@buykiwi.co.nz with a ‘reasonable time’ following the period within which delivery should have been made.
3. Within 5 business days of receiving your complaint, Buy Kiwi will determine whether or not you are eligible for our Buyer Guarantee.
4. If, following consultation with the Seller, Buy Kiwi determines that you are eligible for our Buyer Guarantee, in the first instance, the Seller will issue you with a replacement product, or a refund.
4. Issue of refunds

If the Seller notifies you that you will be issued with a refund, you will be refunded within 5 business days of such notice.If you do not receive your refund within this time, please let us know and we will process your refund on the Seller’s behalf.

You will be refunded to the payment method that you used to pay for your products.

If we cannot make payment back to the payment method you used to make your purchase, we will need to make alternative arrangements with you. In the first instance you will need to contact one of our customer experience team to let them help with the refund.

5. Using other methods to claim

You cannot use multiple methods to get a refund or replacement of your products. After selecting a process (e.g. through our Buyer Guarantee, or requesting a chargeback from your payment provider) you may only use that process to resolve your complaint.

If you request a chargeback from your payment provider or file any other dispute, any requests already opened through Buy Kiwi for the same product will be cancelled.

The warranties that we offer and provide pursuant to our Terms and Conditions are in addition to the consumer warranties and guarantees under the New Zealand Consumer Law.
